2011 National Geographic Online: Intelligent Travel Editorial, October 24

"Sunday, May 18, 1980 about 20 seconds after 8:32 a.m. PDT, apparently in response to a magnitude 5.1 earthquake about 1 mile beneath the volcano, the bulged, unstable north flank of Mount St. Helens suddenly began to collapse, triggering a rapid and tragic train of events that resulted in widespread devastation and the loss of 57 people." The lateral blast devastated an area of about 230 square miles that contained lakes, rivers, old growth forest and wildlife.

About a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Seattle, what we're looking at here is the base area around Mount St. Helens, 31 years after the eruption. Full history of Mount S. Helens
