Ilona Berzups > "In the 1970's, the Washington Public Power Supply System (WPPSS, aka "whoops") began the largest nuclear power plant construction project in U.S. history: reactors 1, 2, and 4 at Hanford, and reactors 3 and 5 at Satsop, west of Olympia. As the budget swelled to $24 billion, and public opinion turned against nuclear power (after Three-Mile Island), the project was cancelled, with only one plant to be completed (at Hanford). At Satsop, construction was well along, and plant number 3 was about 85% complete, with the reactor in place. Cooling towers, 480 feet tall, never saw a breath of steam, and demolition costs are estimated to be in the hundreds of millions. The site has been transformed into a unique business/technology park. Ilona Berzups > High tension wires, like a giant cat, stand guard over one of two cooling towers, part of the abandoned Satsop nuclear plant project. At 480 feet tall the tower is many times taller than the high tension wires while the position of the shot plays tricks with perspective.
